The Generosity of David

This generosity of David has no rival. One event that provided us with the a glance at his generosity was the event in I Samuel 22:2

And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. So he became captain over them. And they were about four hundred men with him

Here is David, a man who lives in great uncertainty; he barely knows the source of his next meal. He was also living in fear of death because Saul was chasing him. Yet, he decided to be responsible for those people with such physical and emotional needs. If I were David, I would have said to them, “I am very sorry, I cannot even sustain myself. You will be a burden to me. My safety and yours are not guaranteed because Saul can kill us all as he did to the priests”. But, instead, David just said yes, becoming responsible for these men.

I asked one of my lecturers in the Bible School a question that made him laugh. I said, sir, “why is it that young ministers start a ministry in the urban area nowadays”. I mentioned some interiors and rural locations and said it is as if God is no longer sending young men there anymore. He told me that many young ministers are not willing to give. They prefer to receive.

Today, I want to tell you that the widow who gave two mites was a generous man like David (Luke 21:1-4). There are many questions these people do not bother to ask. Like the widow, Jesus said she gave all she had. The woman was not concerned about where her next meal will come from. Her survival was not her priority but to share. David also did not ask the following question:

  1. When any of the creditors of the indebted comes around, how will I take care of the situation?
  2. How do I help these distressed ones know I am also in distress?
  3. This discontented one, can I satisfy them?

Suppose we are to bring this teaching into our lives. I am not pushing for a life of generosity without knowledge. Still, I want to say that when you wait until you are comfortable before comforting others with what the Lord has given you, it is late. At this point, I want us to tell the Lord to help us live a life of generosity

In conclusion, the scripture below is perfect instruction for all.

Galatian 6:9

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
