My Mother Got It Right by Dr Nathaniel Omilani

I am writing this piece in honour of my mother’s memory, who went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 6 2025. I am still processing the events surrounding your passing, and all I can say is that God is my peace. In this article, I will share with my readers how you influenced my spiritual growth.

I Timothy 1:5 (NIV)

I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

My journey of faith as a Christian shares a striking resemblance to that of Timothy. Timothy’s spiritual foundation was first nurtured by his grandmother Lois, whose steadfast belief and gentle wisdom laid the groundwork for his faith. As he grew, his mother, Eunice, further strengthened the foundation by instilling in him the teachings and values of Christianity. The Apostle Paul, recognizing Timothy’s unique discipleship journey, penned words of encouragement about him, highlighting how Timothy’s path was more manageable than that of others. He attributed this significant difference to the solid groundwork provided by both his mother and grandmother, whose love and devotion shaped Timothy into the devoted believer he became.

A woman of Prayer

I recall my mother praying almost every night when I was a young child. I knew nothing about prayer, but I saw her pacing up and down all night. All she has in terms of scripture are psalms confessing them. At times, she will tell me to go get her one hundred stones. This is to help her count the number of times she has read a particular portion of the psalm. This prayer comes with fasting. Total fasting, white fasting, and all kinds of fasts that the Christ Apostolic Church people are accustomed to at the time.

A woman of the Word

My mother’s first pastor is a mainstream prophet. The church is a prayer church. However, God showed us mercy, and we began to be taught by a dedicated teacher of the Word, Pastor Fedrik Kolawole Emola, in a new church we attended. He emphasizes the importance of God’s Word, and his congregation is expected to live by it. As a result, my mother became one of the teachers in the children’s Sunday school. Participating in the Sunday school preview significantly improved her biblical literacy, and she began to teach me about the Word of God.

Eventually, she started a Bible club of her own, which attracted between fifty and sixty children to our house at the time. We would share snacks at the end of each meeting. My mother also emphasized the importance of having a quiet time for prayer and reflection. She bought me the Daily Manna devotional, which greatly assisted in my spiritual growth. As I began to have night visions, she acted as my Joseph, interpreting most of those visions for me.

Her Service to God

She dedicated her life to serving God as a children’s worker, a Christian leader, a family coach, and a counsellor, inspiring those around her with her unwavering commitment to uplifting others. In my assessment of her service to the kingdom, the most impactful aspect is her calling to become a Christian midwife. God has used her to deliver over 250 children, and at the same time, she has been able to preach to unbelieving pregnant women and their spouses. She does not charge for her services. She relies on generous donations.

I conclude

Parents should make sure they support their children in developing their faith.

  1. Glory be to God Almighty for a well spent life she had while with us. Her memories can’t be erased easily from my heart. On three occasions I’ve made attempts to go into the mission house to greet her when I came only to realise she had gone home to be with the Lord.
