Happy New Month and God bless you in the remaining half of the year 2021. This edition of Tuesday light is focused on how God transformed the life of Jacob.
Our Reality and Jacob’s Reality
The Book of Genesis 32, verse 10, documented that Jacob’s recollection of what life was when he crossed Jordan to go and serve Laban. The only property or possession he had was a walking stick. He had no wife, no change of clothes, no money. However, while returning to his father’s house, he returned as two bands. He now has all he lacked. The year 2021 is a year that appears to be challenging in almost all the world’s nations because the impact of COVID-19 is still evident in the economy and the social life of people. At the same time, the economy of countries is causing stress in marriages and ambitions of individuals. This does not exclude all other life issues that are always with humanity before the arrival of COVID-19. Among these issues are marital crisis, sickness, diseases and educational disappointment, marital disappointments, emotional turbulence, loss of a loved one, hunger, poverty, to mention a few.
Considering achievement and attainment in the last six months makes you think all you have in your possession is a walking stick. Yet, you are also crossing to the other six months of the year 2021 with just a walking stick as Jacob crossed to Jordan. No Job, no husband, no wife, no children, no friends, no money, no car, huge debt, no accommodation, no school fees, no helpers and only a walking stick.
Jacob’s Walking Stick
The walking stick of Jacob simply represents the things and events that do not make you proud. For example, a rickety car you don’t want to park in the church car park could be your walking stick or a challenging health condition.
And you must realize that it is the will of God for you also to experience what Jacob experienced. He returned as two bands to the same Jordan. Now there are two wives and two concubines. There are twelve sons and a daughter. There are many male and female servants. He had so much livestock that he could give Esau two hundred female goats, among other gifts (Gen 32:14).
What is the difference between the Jacob with a Staff and the one who became two Bands?
Jacob attributed the difference to two factors; mercy and truth. In the realm of the spirits, things don’t just happen. It is by these spiritual forces that God transformed him.
Gen 32:10
And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, the LORD which saidst unto me, return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will deal well with thee
It means that Jacob came back as two bands because he was a recipient of God’s mercy and truth. When these two spiritual forces rest upon a life, the staff in such hands will not matter compared to the result they will offer. Eleazer, the chief servant of Abraham, searched for a wife for Isaac without any specific address. Coincidentally, at the well, he met his master’s kindred, a beautiful damsel who later became Isaac’s wife. The mercy of God shortens the days of struggle and opens the door for unimaginable blessings.
Eleazar reflected upon what took place and discovered that he experienced the mercy and truth of the God of Abraham and not mere coincidence.
Gen 24:27
And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of my master Abraham, who hath not left destitute my master of his mercy and his truth: I being in the way, the LORD led me to the house of my master’s brethren.
It is very important and instructive for us to understand that God’s mercy makes you not live as destitute. It is the mercy of God that makes your journey to be fast. It is the mercy of God that changed the story of Jacob all of a sudden. The second factor that we have to think about is the truth of God. It is the truth of God that made Jacob experience the transformation he experienced. And Jesus said I am the way, the truth and life (John 14:6). So, suppose you want to experience the truth of God. In that case, that will change your life, from somebody who possesses just a walking stick and transform you to somebody with several bands. So, you must come to Jesus. He said he knows the way, and God’s grace will help you. In Jesus name (Amen.)
